How to measure up for the correct size mattress for cots & cot beds:
We cannot stress enough that it is very important to have the correct size mattress. The gap between the mattress and cot sides and ends should not be more than 3 cm when the mattress is pushed tightly to one side.
If it is any larger than this, your baby could get an arm or leg trapped in the gap and could be dangerous, even fatal.
The cot should be assembled before measuring for the mattress. Once the cot is assembled, accurately measure the interior length & the width of the cot base. The mattress must be a snug fit & absolutely no smaller than 3 cm of these measurements.
It should not be too tight as that would impair the use of the drop–side action.
The most important thing to remember is that the cot mattress needs to fit the cot properly. Large gaps can pose an unnecessary danger to your child. When pressed tightly against the side of the cot a mattress should not leave a gap of more than a 3 cm between itself and the cot sides.
Ensure that the gap between the cot mattress and the top of the cot is deep enough to prevent your child from climbing out. As a rule, cot mattresses should not exceeed a depth of 10 cm. for British cots.
In many cases there may be a stamp or a sticker on the base of the cot which will indicate the recommended size of mattress.
If you know the make & model of the cot, cot bed or travel cot we can usually advise which size of mattress you need. Our Mattress size reference library may be of help.
Mattresses are also available for unusual shapes such a bowended or oval cots.
We must point out again - THERE MUST NOT be any gap that exceeds 3cm. between the mattress & the cot sides. You will still be able to tuck in any blankets etc.
