What's in a name?


According to the ONS, there were 723,165 live births in England and Wales during 2010, with 27,700 different boys’ names and 34,700 different girls’ names registered.

For girls, Olivia retains top spot while Sophie is the choice for second place while Evie, Ruby, and Lily were the highest climbing new entries to the top 10 girls’ names when compared with the 2000 ranks, while Lauren and Hannah have fallen the furthest since 2000.

For boys, Oliver was the most popular boys' name for the second year running and Jack held his stance as the number two. Within the 100 most popular boys’ names, there were six new entries: Ollie, Bobby, Caleb, Jenson, Dexter and Kayden.
