Cot death still biggest killer of babies

Cot death is still the biggest killer of babies between one month and a year old, one of Britain's leading baby charities said Tuesday, announcing findings of a study that showed that anxious parents are concerned they may unwittingly be harming their baby every time they put their child to sleep.

Around 300 babies die each year from cot death, a term commonly used to describe a sudden and unexplained infant death. The syndrome is still the biggest killer of babies aged over a month old in Britain -- claiming more lives each year than the combined toll for road accidents, leukemia and meningitis.

The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths (FSID) revealed Tuesday that one in five parents who contacted their helpline from October 2006 to  March 2007 voiced concern on their child's cots, bedding and mattresses.

The FSID's month-long 'Save a Baby' campaign is aimed at raising awareness among new parents about and the precautions they can take to reduce the risk of cot death. The awareness campaign has helped to slash the risk of cot-death in Britain, with the death-rate falling by 75 percent over the past two decades. But the syndrome remains a concern for all parents.

The charity offers parents three essential tips for reducing the risk of cot-death:

· Place your baby on its back when it is asleep

· Both parents should stop smoking. It is important that no-one smokes in the same room as your baby

· The baby should sleep in the same room as its parents for the first six months. The child should sleep in a crib or cot.

Anyone wishing to take part in the campaign should visit the FSID  website.
