How to measure up for the correct size mattress for cots & cot beds:

tape measureWe cannot stress enough that it is very important to have the correct size mattress. The gap between the mattress and cot sides and ends should not be more than 3cm when the mattress is pushed tightly to one side although if you are only using a sheet for bedding, we recommend only 1cm gap so the mattress is as flush as can be.

If it is any larger than this, your baby could get an arm or leg trapped in the gap and could be dangerous, even fatal.

The cot should be assembled before measuring for the mattress. Once the cot is assembled, accurately measure the interior length & the width of the cot base. The mattress must be a snug fit & absolutely no more than 3cm should be taken off the total dimensions.

A cot mattress should not be too tight as that would impair the use of the drop–side action.

Ensure that the gap between the cot mattress and the top of the cot is deep enough to prevent your child from climbing out. As a rule, cot mattresses should not exceed a depth of 10cm for British cots. To be classed as a cot there needs to be a gap of 50cm or more between the top of the mattress and the top of the cot sides.

In many cases there may be a stamp or a sticker on the base of the cot which will indicate the recommended size of mattress.

Mattresses are also available for unusual shapes such a bow-ended or oval.

We must point out again - There MUST NOT be any gap that exceeds 3cm. between the mattress & the cot sides. You will still be able to tuck in any blankets etc.
